What is solar?

Solar is the process of harnessing the power of the sun and converting it into usable power for homes and businesses.

How does solar work?

Solar panels convert the suns energy into DC power. Inverters then take that DC power and convert it into AC power that then can be used by the home.

How much does it cost?

Solar systems are designed specific to the user needs. Some systems require more components than others and are then more expensive, others less and are then cheaper.
Ballpark number for a 2,000 sqft home is $20,00-$40,000 but is dependent on many factors.

How many panels do I need on my roof?

Dependent on system size. Larger systems need more panels, smaller systems require less. Ballpark number for a 2,000 sqft home is around 26 panels.

Can solar power my entire house?

Yes solar can power your entire home. Solar systems are designed specifically to the customer needs and wants. A system can easily be designed to power the full load of a home.

Are there special tax incentives or state rebates?

Yes. The Federal Govt has a solar tax credit. The Inflation Reduction Act passed in late 2022. The Residential Clean Energy Credit or Investment Tax Credit (ITC) increased the solar tax credit to 30% gross cost of a solar system. This includes all components and labor associated with a solar system. Also the State of South Dakota offers a Property Tax Exemption of $50,000. Homes owners are able to subtract $50,000 off their homes value when paying property taxes for the life their solar system.

What's my return on investment ROI? How many years will it take for a system to pay for itself?

Generally speaking 5-12 years. It is dependent on factors such as solar system cost, utility rates and consumers habits. Once a system is paid off it will continue to make power for your home for many years.

What are the warranties on a solar system?

25 years on panels. Electrical components 10-15 years dependent on manufacturer. Batteries 10-15 years dependent on manufacturer.

Will solar panels get destroyed in a hail storm?

While nothing is guaranteed panels with a UL listing 61730 are resistant to 1″ hail @ 55mph. Some companies even offer a panel that is rated for 3″ hail @ 88mph.

How much maintenance is required of a solar system?

Very little. Typically the only maintenance that is needed is occasionally cleaning of the panels. They will still produce power if dirty just not as efficiently.

Solar is too expensive for me. How can I justify taking out a loan?

Solar is more affordable than ever in history. The Federal Government is offering a 30% tax credit for property owners who install solar systems on their property. The ITC or Investment Tax Credit was extended in 2022 for another 10 years and is set to expire in 2023. This allows property owners to take advantage of the credit for the next decade. There is no other purchase you can make where the Feds are willing to give you a 30% savings.
